Position Overview:
A Better Big Sky is seeking a full-time, dynamic, and strategic Development Director to lead our fundraising initiatives and drive the growth of our financial resources. This role is essential in building upon our current success and ensuring the sustainability and growth of our programs. The Development Director will be responsible for developing and implementing comprehensive fundraising strategies, work with the Executive Director to manage donor relationships, and oversee grant writing and research.
About A Better Big Sky:
Founded in 2018, A Better Big Sky is a Montana-based donor alliance. We work to bring together individual donors, foundations, and institutional funders to fund large scale coordinated projects. Through these investments we are dedicated to supporting and growing the progressive ecosystem in Montana. We fund programs related to voter registration, civic engagement,community organizing, communications, research and message testing, legislative accountability, as well as direct electoral activities.
Montana’s state-based donor alliance is a part of a national network of state-based donor alliances who individually as well as collectively work to center the work done by in-state grassroots organizations.
With a successful track record of raising over $25 million through the end of 2024, we have worked to dismantle funding and program silos, fostering collaboration among grassroots partners across the state. Our mission is to amplify community engagement, support local movements, and drive positive change in Montana.
Requirements
Role and Responsibilities
The Development Director will:
- Development and Fundraising Strategy:
- Develop and implement comprehensive fundraising strategies, building from the bases of individual and organizational donors already engaged with ABBS.
- Identify an ongoing prospect list.
- Craft compelling grant proposals and fundraising appeals.
- Donor Cultivation and Stewardship:
- Assist the Executive Director to build and maintain relationships with existing and potential donors.
- Design and execute donor engagement and stewardship programs.
- Ensure timely and effective donor communications and acknowledgments.
- Research and Grant Writing:
- Conduct thorough research to identify grant opportunities aligned with our mission.
- Prepare, submit, and manage grant proposals.
- Track and report on grant progress and outcomes.
- Collaboration and Team Support:
- Work closely with the Executive Director and other team members to align fundraising efforts with organizational goals.
- Provide training and support to staff and volunteers involved in fundraising activities.
- Foster a culture of philanthropy within the organization and with the board of directors.

Qualifications:
- Experience: Minimum of five years of experience in development or fundraising roles, with a proven track record of successful fundraising from major donors and foundations. Must have experience with solicitations overs $10,000.
- Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills, including experience in crafting proposals and appeals. Ability to build and maintain relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders.
- Strategic Thinking: Demonstrated ability to develop and implement effective fundraising strategies and goals.
- Research Proficiency: Experience in conducting grant research and writing compelling proposals.
- Leadership: Ability to lead and support a team, with a collaborative approach to working with staff, volunteers, and board members.
- Cultural Competence: Understanding of and sensitivity to the diverse communities and grassroots organizations in Montana.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in fundraising databases, MS Office and Google Workspace.
